Fiber Composite Exoskeleton
(CCW: open/extended; closed/retracted; head mount unit under construction on plaster model )

The pedipalp was originally designed on a 3D modeling system. The joint elements were rapid prototyped, molded, and cast in titanium. These were then assembled with titanium rod and teflon caps interlaced into the bone structure using fiber composites. The completed pedipalp is operated via a series of cable tendons across seven joints: pulling on an individual cable produces an isolated joint movement. The device will be head mounted, and we are currently researching solutions for animating it via computer controlled motors..
